He had a very varied career and is best remembered as Emily Dickinsons mentor but on his gravestone it is recorded that he commanded the first regiment of "colored troops" the First South Carolina Volunteers.<br /><br />There was an honor guard of African American soldiers at his funeral.Peter Reillyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01473701483727808782noreply@blogger.com
